What should you do if you are hit by a cyclist while walking?

Nashville is known for its beautiful weather and active population, which includes plenty of bicyclists, joggers and pedestrians.

Unfortunately, this also means opportunities for accidents between pedestrians and bikes.

If you are struck by a bicycle while walking around Nashville, here are some things to do:

  • Check for injuries

This is the most important thing to do. Before anything else, make sure you aren’t seriously injured. Check your upper and lower body for bleeding, bruising and potential broken bones.

Once you are sure you are okay, do the same with the bicyclist. Remember that adrenaline spikes after traumatic events, so even though you may be injured the initial adrenaline surge could mask it.

Again, before anything else make sure all parties are okay and no one is seriously injured. If needed, call an ambulance as soon as possible.

  • Call the police

Police reports are key to supporting any insurance claims you may need later. If you have any injuries resulting from the accident, a report will help corroborate your version of what happened.

Make sure law enforcement gets all the details right. Don’t be afraid to speak up to correct them or add details. This is your chance to make sure the report is as accurate as possible.

  • Gather information

If the cyclist stays at the scene, get as much information as you can from them. Contact information and insurance are important.

However, if the cyclist attempts to leave without providing any information, do not try to stop them. Take photographs of the cyclist and their equipment, as well as where the accident occurred if you are able.

If you cannot take photographs, write down as much detail about the cyclist and their appearance as you can.

Speak to any eyewitnesses and get their version of the accident. Record their contact information and ask if they’re comfortable with you reaching out to them later to get more information or check on details.

  • Get medical attention

Once you have gathered information and law enforcement clears you to leave the scene, head to a hospital.

Even if you feel perfectly fine, you may have unknown injuries like a concussion.

These injuries won’t be readily obvious, so seeking medical attention is important even if you feel fine.

Many people don’t know what to do when a bicyclist and pedestrian collide, and end up downplaying the event. It’s important to treat these accidents with the caution and thoroughness they require.
