MOTORCYCLE ACCIDENTS

ShareTheRoad_Logo-750x375.jpgMay is Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. The idea is to remind drivers of all other vehicles to safely "share the road" with motorcyclists, and to be extra alert to help keep motorcyclists safe. Motorcyclists are also reminded to make themselves visible to other motorists.

Despite safety campaigns and awareness initiatives, Tennessee roads can be dangerous places for motorcycle riders. According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, motorcyclists are more than 26 times more likely than passenger car occupants to die in a traffic crash.

Last year in Tennessee, there were 2,710 motorcycle crashes that resulted in 121 deaths. 93,000 motorcyclists were injured in wrecks nationwide in 2012. 4,957 motorcyclists were killed.

Motorcyclists have all the same rights and privileges as any motor vehicle driver on the roadway. However, motorcyclists must be extremely cautious because of the enormous harm that can occur when a passenger vehicle crashes into a motorcycle.

If you are planning to ride a motorcycle on Tennessee streets, be sure to make motorcycle safety a priority. Consider participating in the Tennessee Motorcycle Rider Education Program.
